GoodSAM partnership with East Neuk First Responders
'This app is potentially lifechanging for saving lives in the East Neuk' a quote from a local politican
Members of the RNLI Anstruther lifeboat crew join with ENFR as local GoodSAM responders
How is GoodSAM partnering with East Neuk First Responders?
East Neuk First Responders will be supporting the platform by enrolling first aid trained volunteers on the platform. This means that when a medical emergency call is made to 999 via the Alerter app - any GoodSAM Responders will be notified.
This app is in addition to East Neuk Community First Responder ambulance partnership work and has the potential to save many more lives as it gets help quicker and more often to those in need.
If you are a member of the East Neuk community with First Aid skills and would like to become a GoodSAM Responder, please select “East Neuk First Responders” from the list of Verifying Organisations when registering. If you are not in the East Neuk area but have the skills to become a GoodSAM Responder, please select “GoodSAM” when registering.
What is GoodSAM?
GoodSAM is a community of first aid trained Responders, willing to assist during life threatening emergencies. Many are off duty doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other members of the emergency services. All are trained in basic first aid and qualified to perform lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
GoodSAM has developed two apps - the GoodSAM Alerter and Responder app.
The GoodSAM Alerter app allows bystanders or patients to contact the emergency services, and at the same time automatically notify nearby GoodSAM Responders of the medical emergency.
By alerting our community of GoodSAM Responders, the platform connects those in need with those who have the skills to provide critical help before the emergency services arrive. Both apps are free to download on all smartphones.

How does it work?
A patient or an untrained bystander can trigger an alert from their smartphone when there is an emergency using the Alerter App. This allows them to speak with the Emergency Services in the usual way.
However, at the same time, an alert is also automatically sent to the smartphones of the three nearest GoodSAM Responders - asking them to come to the scene.
How could the partnership make a difference?
For every minute someone who is in cardiac arrest does not receive CPR or defibrillation, their chances of survival fall by 10%.
It is not possible to have enough ambulance resources to be on scene and able to provide treatment within a couple of minutes.
Therefore, it is important to alert people with the right life support training skills who are in the immediate vicinity of the patient to start CPR until Community First Responders or ambulance personnel arrive. By alerting those trained in the local community to quickly come to the scene, we hope to save more lives.
It is important to note that the system does not replace or affect the Ambulance Service dispatch in any way - with the ambulance crews continuing to be sent as normal.
